Biography

Born in the West Country I grew up in the blitzed city of Bristol. My early experience of man's inhumanity drew me to the beauty and simplicity of nature epitomised by the breathtaking views of the North Cornish coast.

From my first intake of air on the Cornish side of the River Tamar I knew Cornwall would one day be my home.

Although passionate about art from an early age I was guided to take up surveying as a profession and after studying at Reading University [College of Estate Management] I practised in the UK initially and then on major International projects throughout the world.

However, my experience and travels reinforced my artistic inspiration and in 1989 I took up residence in St. Ives in Cornwall to paint full-time. In 1993 I opened one of St. Ives premier art galleries [Porthminster Gallery] and moved to the Tobias Trenwith Studio in 2004.

'My paintings are a natural extension of my personality and represent the interaction of simplicity and nature as depicted in the Cornish landscape. I have a special affinity with the sea and particularly with the West Penwith coastline and this is reflected in many of my paintings. The combination of natural colour and the absence of unnecessary detail culminate in a representation of the very soul of Cornwall.
